2-22 black iceBy this time of year, most of us are used to driving in winter weather conditions. But we need to keep our guard up for a roadway danger that is unpredictable and difficult to respond to – black ice.

Also known as clear ice, this unexpected and often hard-to-see thin layer of transparent ice on the road can cause your vehicle to skid and you to lose control. Here are some tips for driving on Iowa’s wintry roads:

2-15 need a hugNot everyone appreciates a big bear hug, but we all need that snug tug from a seat belt when you’re ready to road trip. Some people think they can rely solely on airbags and not use seat belts, but did you know that seat belts are made to work with airbags, not replace them? If you don’t wear your seat belt, you could be thrown into a rapidly opening frontal airbag. Such force could injure or even kill you.

2-8 major kudosHearing your name over a loudspeaker or on TV can be exciting, but sometimes the biggest heroes are the ones providing strong, quiet support outside of the fanfare. In football, the quarterback wouldn’t be able to do his job well without a solid offensive line. Yet, you’re much more apt to know the name of the winning quarterback than the left tackle. The same is true for a designated driver providing support for those who need a safe ride home.

2-1 same stuff different dayEven when we’re not in the middle of a pandemic, January and February in Iowa can get a little monotonous. It’s easy to get in a rut and just go through the same motions every day.

We’re hoping one of those repetitive motions is buckling up every time you get into a vehicle.  While the latest Iowa seat belt survey showed that 95.2 percent of front-seat occupants are wearing seat belts, the survey does not measure whether back seat passengers are belted.

1-25 crosses the lineIf you have been behind the wheel, you have probably seen someone in another vehicle texting while driving. While texting, three dangerous distractions take place.

1-18 drive chillThere is a lot going on that could have you on edge right now. It’s so easy to get caught up in our hurry-up world. Driving aggressively, whether that’s speeding, tailgating, cutting in front of another driver, or a host of other hostile actions behind the wheel can put you and everyone on the road with you at risk.

1-11 speeding through winter fullLet’s face it, once we make it through the holidays many of us are anxious to zoom through winter to warmer days ahead. No matter how fast you move through your days, spring is still 68 days away.

Similarly, speeding behind the wheel won’t land you at your destination much faster. And that minute or two you gain in time doesn’t gain you anything if you get in a crash or put the lives of others on the road in danger.

Message Monday - All the leaves are brown & sky's gray. Check tires today

November 16, 2020

11-16 leaves are brownHeading into the winter, air temperatures in Iowa can change drastically. Since the air in your tires is a gas, it expands when heated and contracts when cools. According to www.goodyear.com, for every 10 degrees of temperature drop, tires will drop 1-2 pounds of pressure.

An underinflated tire can't maintain its shape and becomes flatter than intended while in contact with the road. If a vehicle's tires are underinflated by only 6 pounds per square inch, it could lead to tire failure and you could experience a significant loss of steering precision and cornering stability. While 6 psi doesn't seem excessively low, remember, it usually represents about 20 percent of the tire's recommended pressure. In addition, this reduction in air pressure can also impact your fuel economy.

Message Monday - Rut Roh Shaggy, deer can dent your Mystery Machine

11-9 rut rohSince the cartoon first debuted in 1969, the lovable mystery solvers from Scooby Doo have relied on the Mystery Machine to sweep them away from danger. But traveling in your own “mystery machine” can be dangerous this time of year if you unexpectedly encounter a deer. Dusk and dawn are when you’re most likely to say “Jeepers!” as a deer darts out of the ditch.

To help you stay safe, remain alert, driver sober, slow down and continuously scan your surroundings to watch for any animals in your path before you get too close. But if a deer does happen to end up in your path, don’t veer to avoid hitting it.
