7-28 i want to ride my bicycleThousands of visitors flocked to Iowa this week for RAGBRAI. This annual event shines a spotlight on bicycling as recreation, but there are also many Iowans who rely on bicycling to get to where they need to go every day.

Regardless of the reason for bicycles being on the road, many people misunderstand the laws and rules as it relates to all of us sharing the road together. The Iowa Bicycle Coalition has put together a website (https://www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/iowa-bicycle-laws/) to help bicyclists understand Iowa law as it relates to two-wheeled transportation.

7-21 focus on the roadDo you ever have those days where it seems nothing goes right? If some of the things in your world are out of control, one thing you can control is what you do behind the wheel.

When you’re driving, try to put all of the distractions aside and just focus on the road. It might be hard, but it’s worth it. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has data that shows more than 3,000 lives are lost each year because of distracted driving.

7-14 more cowbellWhat’s important in your life? For some of us, it’s easy to tune out the background noise, but for others, things like our phones can cause irresistible but extremely dangerous distractions.

When you’re driving, do your best to tune out the distractions by putting your phone out of reach. Focus on what is most important, driving safely to make sure you and your passengers make it to your destination.

How can you help reduce the number of distracted driving crashes?

7-7 buckle in back

Buckle up - every seat, every trip. While a study (https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/ViewPublication/812142.pdf) shows parents and caregivers traveling with small children typically buckle up the little ones in the back seat, unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to carry over for older kids and adults.
