Roadside Chat - Deaths go down when eyes go up


2-18 deaths go downWhen you get behind the wheel, where are your eyes and what’s on your mind? If your eyes and mind are not focused on the road, the traffic around you, and the information available to you on road signs, you’re taking a risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that as many as one in 10 roadway deaths can be in some way attributed to distracted driving.

The obvious distraction that takes your eyes off the road is using your cell phone. But distractions happened behind the wheel long before cell phones. Here are a few common ones.

  1. Messing with the radio, navigation, or entertainment system
  2. Turning your attention to a passenger, child, or pet
  3. Eating or drinking
  4. Daydreaming

In a world where we always seem to be multi-tasking, the vehicle should be one place we focus on one task at a time. Take a break from the distractions when you’re behind the wheel and simply drive.
