Iowa DOT weather resource - new look, additional information

10/21/2021

Weather screen shotHaving an accurate weather forecast is critical to helping us keep Iowa roads in great shape, no matter what the season. Working with our weather vendor, DTN, we rolled out a new weather product on Oct. 1, just in time for winter preparations. The new website, ClearPath, (https://iowadot.clearpathweather.com) replaces the previous WeatherSentry site.

Craig Bargfrede of the Maintenance Bureau said, “The new weather package has all the elements we depend on plus the benefit of a road condition forecast that we’ll be testing over this winter season. It will also include enhanced year-round information, including daily video forecasts 365 days a year.”

If you are a DOTer responsible for checking the weather forecasts, you’ll have your own login for the site. As with the previous weather website, there is a log-in for each garage, as well. There is a DOTnet page set up to help you with access to the new weather website and direct telephone numbers for the DTN forecasters and tech support. Go to https://iowadot.gov/dotnet/maintenance/docs/WinterOperations/Weather/accessInfo2022.pdf

The change in DTN products also includes a new mobile app to get weather on the go. If you have a DOT-issued device or are using your personal device for business with a “Bring Your Own Device” agreement, the app is available in the Comp Portal or you can search your device’s app store for DTN MDSS to load the app on your personal device.

Tina Greenfield of the Maintenance Bureau said, “We will be holding eight training sessions. Anyone who needs to use this site will be able to log on to a training session to see the demonstration and ask questions. If you feel you need to be included in a training session and have not received an email related to these sessions, please send me an email at tina.greenfield@iowadot.us.”

While some things of the forecasting service are changing, other elements will remain the same. That includes twice-daily video forecasts. Morning (6 a.m.) and afternoon (3 p.m.) videos will be loaded to https://iowadot.clearpathweather.com. As has happened in the past, when there is a larger winter event looming a special event video forecast is created and an email will be sent to those who need to put that information into action.

The criteria for the special event video forecasts include:

  • Six inches of snow at any location
  • .25 inches of ice
  • Blizzard conditions
  • National Weather Service winter weather warning

If you have any questions about logging in to the new system, please contact Tina Greenfield at tina.greenfield@iowadot.us.
