Message Monday- Don't heed Phil. Keep your winter driving skills

2-3 phil no shadowPunxsutawney Phil, what does the rodent know, anyway? Whether or not winter lasts two more weeks or two more months, the important thing is to be prepared if you’re going to drive in tricky weather conditions that can change in a heartbeat.

If it’s snowy or icy, the first question to ask yourself is, “Can this trip be postponed until conditions improve?” If you really need to be on the road, here are a few tips to help you arrive safely at your destination.

If you are driving

  • Buckle up.
  • Put your phone away and focus your attention on driving.
  • Slow down and allow space between vehicles.
  • Do not use cruise control.
  • Turn on your headlights. You may need to use the switch and not rely on the “auto” setting.

And the last tip, don’t drive angry -

For 2020, there have been 18 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of two since last Monday. As of Jan. 31, 2020, the 2019 fatality count stands at 336. This is subject to change as law enforcement reports are completed. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at
