Message Monday- Your car shouldn't fly - but your "REAL ID" can
Of course, you shouldn’t go fast enough that your vehicle will “fly,” but after Oct. 1, 2020, you can “fly” through airport security if you have a REAL ID.
If you plan to use your driver’s license or DOT-issued ID as proof of identity when you fly, starting October 1, 2020, you will need to make sure your card is marked with the REAL ID gold star in the upper right corner. A REAL ID marked card is also necessary if you want to enter a federal building or nuclear power plant that requires an ID to enter.
Getting the REAL ID gold star involves bringing in specific documentation to prove you are who you say you are. If you are up for renewal before October of next year you can complete this process when you renew your license, or you can come in and get a duplicate if you plan to fly before you are up renewal.
The good news is if you don’t plan to use your license to fly (or enter the specific buildings mentioned above) you don’t need a REAL ID. Also, there’s a chance you may already have one. The Iowa Department of Transportation has been issuing REAL IDs since January 2013. If you received your first Iowa driver’s license or ID card since 2013, you’re already compliant with the law.
If you don’t have a REAL ID or don’t want to get one, you have options, don’t panic! Your regular Iowa driver’s license or ID card is still valid for everything except flying and entering a federal building. If you don’t want to get a REAL ID, but you still want to fly, you can always use a passport, military ID or another form of enhanced identification.
For 2019, there have been 249 fatalities reported on Iowa highways. That’s an increase of nine since last Monday. The 2018 fatality count stands at 319. This is subject to change as law enforcement reports are completed.
