Message Monday - Why did the chicken use the crosswalk? Safety ... silly!

7-1 message mondayAlthough today is International Joke Day, pedestrian safety is no laughing matter. In Iowa, 22 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2018.

According to the American Community Survey, there are 1.55 million workers over 16 in Iowa. Of this total, 0.5 percent reported bicycling to work and 3.5 percent say they walk to work. This translates to approximately 7,730 individual bicycle commuters (not trips) and 54,100 pedestrian commuters.

What can be done to improve safety for all of us? The Iowa DOT has developed a bicycle and pedestrian travel long-range plan to address these issues.

Now back to the funny stuff… who remembers the Ministry of Silly Walks?

For 2019, there have been 142 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of six since last Monday. The 2018 fatality count stands at 318. This is subject to change as law enforcement reports are completed. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at
