Message Monday - Let's talk turkey, 36% of fatalities involve alcohol

11/19/2018

11-19 message mondayTo keep things friendly and light, what are the two things you typically avoid talking about at family gatherings? Most people would say religion and politics because those topics tend to stir up strong feelings and possible disagreements. But what happens when Uncle Joe is enjoying his time at Thanksgiving with a few drinks, and you’re worried how it may impact his drive home?

Whether you are hosting a celebration, or simply a guest, don’t be afraid to have the tough conversation about driving buzzed or drunk. Use a ridesharing app or get others involved to find a sober ride for anyone who has been drinking or offer up a spare bedroom or couch for the night.

Zero Fatalities starts at home with proactive steps to keep your loved ones safe.

Have you heard of “Blackout Wednesday” or “Drinksgiving?”  - https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Blackout-Wednesday_Washington-DC-459287093.html

For 2018, there have been 273 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of eight since last Monday. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf
