TRANSPORTATION MATTERS for IOWA

Message Monday - Nip impaired driving in the bud... dilly dilly

10-1 message mondayDo you know the best way to end impaired driving? Have a plan for a sober ride before the festivities begin.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a good party, whether you’re the king of the castle or the court jester. Did you know drunk or high drivers were responsible for more than one-third of the people who died on Iowa highways in 2017?

Let’s all raise a toast to the venerable designated driver or that wonderful person who comes when you click on a ridesharing app … Dilly, Dilly

Here are the nine perks of being a designated driver… https://youtu.be/fS62TKHa0c8

For 2018, there have been 235 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of five since last Monday. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdfa

Thanks for your comment, Tim. We actually did restructure it to say:

Impaired driving
Nip it in the bud
Dilly Dilly

Here's the background on Dilly Dilly - it has come to mean “something or someone regarded as remarkable."

That's exactly how we see a designated driver.

Impaired and driving should have been on the same line. I know this would have meant restructuring the sentence, but this was more confusing than it needed to be due that. Now I just have to figure our what dilly dilly is about.

It’s definitely something to talk about when you pass under the sign lol

Roma - Here's what we were going for:

nip something in the bud

suppress or destroy something, especially at an early stage.
"the idea has been nipped in the bud at the local level"
synonyms: cut short, curtail, check, curb, thwart, frustrate, stop, halt, arrest, stifle, obstruct, block, squash, quash, subdue, crack down on, stamp out; informal put the kibosh on

Sorry to say we have been trying to figure out what “NIP” stands for. Love the message though. Dilly Dilly
