TRANSPORTATION MATTERS for IOWA

Message Monday - We only need one Hulk - control road rage

4-23 message mondayYou’re not Dr. Bruce Banner. Only the Incredible Hulk’s strength increases as his anger rises. When ordinary people get angry, they make questionable decisions that can have tragic consequences.

Aggressive drivers tend to speed, tailgate, make unsafe lane changes, and run red lights or stop signs. Any one of these behaviors deliberately puts people and property at risk. Anger is a natural emotion. It’s how you manage it that makes all the difference. Staying calm behind the wheel can save lives.

A recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that nearly 80 percent of drivers expressed significant anger, aggression, or road rage behind the wheel at least once in the previous year. Previous research by the AAA Foundation found that from 2003 to 2007, over half of fatal crashes involved at least one driver who performed a potentially aggressive action.

There’s troubling new research that finds a startling 56 percent of all fatal accidents in the United States involve at least one form of aggressive driving. https://www.nbcnews.com/dateline/video/aaa-most-drivers-have-engaged-in-road-rage-aggressive-driving-725464643795

For 2018, there have been 75 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of three since last Monday. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf
