Message Monday - Speeding can lead to skid marks
It doesn’t matter where you’re going, getting there a few minutes late isn’t worth your life. Crash reconstruction can use skid marks to determine the speed of a vehicle involved in a crash, but do you really want to be remembered by a few marks left on the road that quickly fade?
What can you do to reduce your stress and increase your chances of arriving alive?
- Plan ahead and leave 10 minutes early
- Be okay with arriving a little late if necessary
- Relax
- Use your cruise control to manage your speed
- Always buckle up
It’s easy to condemn other drivers when they zip by you, but the truth is many of us have exhibited this same behavior at one time or another. Speed limits are set for your safety. They’re the law, not a suggestion.
The presence or absence of skid marks is a key factor for crash investigations. With motorcycle season upon us, here’s a video of how the Iowa State Patrol investigates crashes with motorcycles. https://youtu.be/-mXxZPM_9Lc
For 2018, there have been 60 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of one since last Monday. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf
