Do you “invest” in safety?

Do you “invest” in safety?

March 29, 2018

Work zone safety awareness photo frameYou know we’re in Iowa when we move right from winter to construction. In an effort to keep everyone safer in work zones, we’ll be sharing photos on social media for National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 9-13.

Similar to what we did last year when employees donned orange to promote work zone safety, we’re asking all Iowa DOT employees who have an interest to snap a photo of individuals or groups wearing safety vests. Send the photo to [email protected]. During Work Zone Awareness week, look for your photo, inserted into the “Invested in Safety” photo frame on the Iowa DOT’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts and on the Zero Fatalities Facebook and Twitter feeds. Feel free to encourage other highway professionals or those interested in highway safety to join the fun by posting their own photos in safety vests on social media and using the hashtag #investedinsafety

Thanks in advance for your participation and let’s make this “investment” count!

3-26 message mondayIt’s a sad fact that most of us have been touched in one way or another by someone who has died in a crash. This type of tragedy should be a rarity. But unfortunately, between 2013 and 2017, the average number of people killed on Iowa highways each year is 338.

That’s one person almost every day.

New license plates coming soon to a treasurer’s office near you

IA PLATE_2017-01Remember when Iowans voted on our new county standard license plate designs online and at the Iowa State Fair last August? The chosen design is now ready to roll off the production line at Iowa Prison Industries and they will start arriving in county treasurers’ offices (and appearing on Iowa’s roads) in the next few weeks.

“The main purpose of license plates is to make the vehicle easily identifiable,” said LaVonne Short with the Iowa Department of Transportation. “We did quite a bit of testing to make sure the new plates serve that purpose well.”

Message Monday - Buckle up, Baby! Road to final four is unpredictable

3-19 message mondayEvery journey has its ups and downs. Whether you’re following your favorite team to the finals or just following a line of traffic on the highway, unexpected roadblocks can alter your course. To keep you safely in your seat when unexpected things happen on the road, always buckle up – every seat, every time.

Message Monday - March Madness? Keep aggression on the court

March 12, 2018

3-12 message mondayBeing aggressive when driving to the basket is a way to win on the court. Being aggressive while driving on the road could end your life.

Aggressive behaviors like going faster than everyone else, weaving, staying close to those around you and never yielding to traffic are admirable on the basketball court, but not on the highway.

Message Monday - Not driving drunk is a slam dunk

March 5, 2018

3-5 message mondayWith college basketball conference championship tournaments happening all over the United States, many fans are gathering to watch and celebrate in victory and commiserate in defeat.

No doubt there will be exciting games featuring high-flying slam dunks. Statistically, the dunk is the highest percentage shot in basketball. How can you raise the percentage of making it home safely after the game? Don’t drive if you’ve been drinking.

Enjoy these highest scoring dunks from the National Basketball Association’s All Star Slam Dunk contests over the years - https://youtu.be/QGuYep0cSAY

For 2018, there have been 49 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of five since last Monday. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf

Our newest snowfighter

Our newest snowfighter

Mason in the shop

Will Jacoby had been plowing snow out of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes garage for eight days in a row. “I got off work and went to bed. I woke up about the time the 6 o’clock news was on,” he said. “It had been a long week or so with snow and ice every day and I was tired. Then on the news, there was this story about a young man with a plow on his wheelchair. He was just so happy to be out plowing his neighbor’s sidewalks and driveways, even all those days in a row.”

The story gave Jacoby an idea. What if he could get this young man, Mason Rumpf, to come to the garage for a tour and maybe even a ride in one of our snowplows. He took the idea to management who also agreed.

Good data is the key to a successful future for automated vehicles in Iowa

March 1, 2018

Big dataThe Iowa Department of Transportation produces, collects, and disseminates a virtual mountain of data. From making road condition and traffic information available to the public through our 511 traveler information system to collecting roadway specific data for researchers and our own planning purposes, The Iowa DOT has long been recognized as a national leader in the amount, quality, and variety of data we can access.

Donna Matulac, the Iowa DOT’s automated vehicle (AV) technologies project manager, said, “To make AVs viable in Iowa, we are 100 percent focused on our data. We want to produce the best, most accurate information in a format that can be the most useful to both the drivers of today and the AVs coming online at a very quick pace.”
