Results of latest safety survey show positive change

The safety of our employees should never be taken lightly. Over the past few years a number of steps have been taken to make the Iowa DOT a safer place to work. From updating safety equipment and training to instituting a Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program, we’re working to change the way all employees view safety.
Changing how we think about safety is a process, but a recent safety survey says we’re making progress. Amy Knight, with the Office of Employee Services, said, “Getting people to think about safety in every aspect of their jobs is going to take time.”

“To be or not to be…” William Shakespeare’s phrase from Hamlet caught the character contemplating whether or not to end his life. Today’s Message Monday version is a modern twist on Hamlet’s struggle.
At any given moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or electronic devices while driving. Few contemplate that each time you pick up that device to reply to a tweet, post, or text could be your last. In 2014, nearly 3,200 people were killed, and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.
