TRANSPORTATION MATTERS for IOWA

Message Monday - April 18, 2016 - Ditch the distraction, not the car

4-18 message mondayEveryone has heard that using your phone while driving is dangerous. So you’ve made the safe choice to put your phone away while driving and instead use your car’s hands-free system to call or send texts or emails. Think you are free from distraction?

Actually, hands-free does not mean risk free. Research is showing that hands-free systems can cause even more of a mental distraction than hand-held devices.

Researchers in a recent AAA study found that potentially unsafe levels of mental distraction can last for as long as 27 seconds after completing a distracting task in some hands free systems. At the 25 MPH speed limit in the study, drivers traveled the length of nearly three football fields during this time.
