Follow up from last week's Leadership Development Conference
Just a week ago, more than 445 Iowa DOT managers, supervisors, and other informal leaders came together for a day-long event focused on developing leadership skills. During the Leadership Development Conference attendees had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and identify issues and barriers related to leadership, strategic planning, performance management, culture, and communication. After identifying barriers, attendees worked together to propose possible solutions to overcome barriers and become more successful as an organization in each of these five areas.
If you attended the session, you have received an email with a link to a survey about the event and a link to documentation on a SharePoint site. If you haven’t completed it already, the survey closes Oct. 30.
But attendees of the conference are not the only ones responsible for improving our agency. Everyone has the ability to make improvements that help the Iowa DOT become smarter, simpler, and customer driven. Even small changes in how you approach your day-to-day work can make a big impact on the way we operate as a team.
So how can the work done at the conference help everyone? Over the next month conference planners and session facilitators will be compiling the information gathered during the breakout sessions.
Next week, the conference committee will have an initial draft of the conference report. The report will be refined and then sent to Management Team for review. Once it is approved, it will be shared with all employees along with recorded portions of the conference.
In addition to the conference report, look for upcoming blog posts that will focus on the five areas: leadership, strategic planning, performance management, culture, and communication. We’ll use the work done by the groups at the conference to explore the barriers and possible solutions related to these topics.
The conference committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the event and all employees who are joining in the effort by making a commitment to stay informed about what is happening throughout our agency. As an organization, we all need to work on improving communication. Whether you make a commitment to read the blog or keep up on email or just have discussions with your supervisor or coworkers, we need to remember we can all work to enjoy our jobs, not just endure.
