Mayflies, bridges, and bypasses – oh my! Thursday 3 with the Iowa DOT #Thurs3DOT

Thursday-Three_2Welcome to this week’s Thursday 3 with the Iowa DOT; each week we are selecting three questions to be featured on our blog that are sent to us on social media using the hashtag #Thurs3DOT.  Our main goal is to help you better understand the transportation system and the logic behind our projects and procedures.  If you have a question you would like answered, post it on our Facebook page or tweet us with the hashtag #Thurs3DOT!'

Q: Why are the lights out on the Savanna/Sabula bridge?

A:  Well, long story short, the mayflies have gone haywire this year; check out this clip:

We are keeping the lights off over the next couple of weeks to avoid attracting the mayflies to the bridge. As you can see in the video, they reached the point of becoming a traffic and safety hazard. We had to send a snow plow to clear the bridge and then lay down sand because it was so slick.

Q: When will U.S. 69 from Ames to Ankeny reopen?

A: U.S. 69 is scheduled to be detoured until Aug. 21. After that, there will be single lane closures while work is done in Huxley. The project is estimated to be finished by Oct. 2.

If you are wondering about a major construction project in your area, you can always check our interactive website: If you need to navigate around a work zone, you can find the most recent travel updates on – but not while you’re driving.

If you have specific questions about a project, our website has the contact information for the local offices around the state

Q: Are they still redesigning the Iowa 5/U.S. 65 bypass as an interstate?

A: This project is still being discussed; the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (DM MPO) is working with the farming community to study this issue.
