To quote the Iowa’s Drivers Manual, defensive driving means “To be a good driver, you must know what is happening around your vehicle. You must look ahead, to the sides, and behind the vehicle. Scanning helps you to see problems ahead, vehicles and people that may be in the road by the time you reach them, signs warning of problems ahead, and signs giving you directions.”
A shorter version of the definition could be, “Drive like your life depends on it”, because it does.

Each one of us expects to get where we are going without incident. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Appropriately wearing a seat belt is a key safety element in the event of a crash.
In Iowa, a recent poll shows that more than 90 percent of drivers and passengers buckle up. That sounds pretty good, but anything less than 100 percent is not enough. What is holding back the non-seatbelt wearers?
Top 10 stupid reasons for not wearing your seat belt…
10) The fine is not big enough.
9) I don’t like the government telling me what to do.
8) The airbag will save me.
7) I’d rather be ejected from the car.
6) The strength in my forearms will protect me.
5) It’s not cool.
4) It rides up on my shoulder.
3) What if I drive into a lake?
2) I ride a motorcycle without a helmet and I’m not dead yet.
And the #1 stupid reason for not wearing my seat belt…
1) I’m not planning on getting into a crash today.
Meet Dot On-the-Spot
October 6, 2014
Yammer users have a new source of Iowa DOT information – Dot On-the-Spot. Dot will be responsible for delivering agency-wide information to the All Company feed on Yammer.
Andrea Henry, director of the Office of Strategic Communications, said “As an agency, we’re going to be ramping up our efforts to communicate within the DOT using Yammer. The Dot On-the-Spot icon is one way for employees to recognize that the information posted to Yammer is coming from an ‘official’ Iowa DOT source.”
