Revamped 511 apps gives travelers and truckers traffic info on the go
For more than a decade travelers have depended on Iowa’s 511 system to provide the most current traffic information. A mobile app for iPhone and Android platforms was developed two years ago to supplement the desktop version and that app has recently been updated to provide easier access to information.
Sinclair Stolle, the Iowa DOT’s 511 coordinator, said, “Since so many people are used to the way the website looks and functions, the mobile app has been updated to more closely resemble the website. Functions are now available to allow users to click an icon and scroll along a route, seeing any cameras, electronic signs or traffic event messages that have been posted along that road. Layers can also be turned off and on to customize the screen for each person. In addition to these enhancements, there is much more detailed information available for the traffic events, construction, and winter road conditions.”
Since the original apps were launched in June 2012, nearly 100,000 downloads have been registered. Android downloads outnumber iOS (Apple) 51,514 to 45,607.
Along with the update to the original Iowa 511 app, the Iowa DOT has added an app specifically geared toward truck drivers, Iowa 511 Trucker. Stolle said, “The trucker version was launched to show information important to truckers including load size restrictions and weigh station locations.”
While the Iowa DOT has strived to make the new mobile 511 app easier to use for all travelers, Sinclair stresses that safety is still the main focus. “We want people to have all the information they need right at their fingertips, but also be responsible when they use technology. Please do not use any mobile device when you are driving. Pull off to a safe location and plan your trip using the 511 app, or better yet, know before you go.”
