Zero Fatalities Message Monday - Aug. 18, 2014
School is already in session in many Iowa districts and more are set to start this week. That means school buses are sharing the road with all the other traffic. Do you know when it is legal to pass a stopped school bus?
In May 2011, 7-year-old Kadyn Halverson was struck and killed near Northwood while crossing the road to get to her school bus. As a result, the Iowa legislature passed Kadyn’s Law. With the passage of Kadyn’s Law the following penalties were established. Your first offense for not obeying this simple law will get you a ticket for at least $250, possible jail time, and a 30-day license suspension. Your second offense (in five years) will be a minimum $315 fine, a 90-day suspension of your license and possible jail time.
For more information about Kadyn's Law and school bus safety, visit the Iowa DOT’s page here: http://www.iowadot.gov/schoolbus/default.html
One of the provisions of Kadyn’s law was to require a multiagency team to insure the safety effectiveness of the law. The report can be found here: http://www.iowadot.gov/schoolbus/pdf/Fullreport-Kadynslaw.pdf
