TRANSPORTATION MATTERS for IOWA

A picture is worth a thousand words and sometimes your time is worth more

Ankeny-dl-cameraIn a lifetime, the average American spends up to three years waiting in line, according to Answers.com. Want to cut down your wait time if you need to visit one of the Iowa DOT 19 driver’s license stations? Check out a new addition to the Iowa DOT’s website, Web cameras at each driver’s license station.

The cameras were installed in driver’s license station locations to give customers an idea of how many people are already at that location. The idea behind the cameras is that they may help some customers decide when to go or when to delay their trip.

To find the camera views on the web go to the Iowa DOT homepage, www.iowadot.gov, click on “Tell me more” under the Drivers/Vehicles icon.  Click on “licensed drivers,” and then “Iowa driver’s license and ID card issuance sites” www.iowadot.gov/mvd/ods/dlsites.htm. Choose the location on the map and click “more information” to view the image for that station. Cameras are currently available at Iowa DOT sites only, or the red icons on the map.

Cameras are set to come online soon in Waterloo. A camera will be installed in Ottumwa when the station is relocated later this year.

“We realize that our customers’ time is valuable. This tool is another way that the Iowa DOT is working to be more customer driven,” said Kim Snook, director of the Iowa DOT’s Office of Driver Services. “So far the feedback we’ve received has been really positive. Having customers come in and tell us they were able to see the number of people at the driver’s license station before they left home reinforces the importance of providing better information to those we serve.”

Future plans include adding information to the website on the number of customers waiting and the estimated wait time to give customers more information that will help them plan their visit.

While you’re on the Iowa DOT’s site, you can find lots of other useful information to help speed up your trip like what documents to bring with you, and the station’s address, telephone number, and hours of operation.
