Message Monday - Old Taylor can't come to the phone...she's driving

10/02/2017

10-2 message mondayIn Iowa, using your phone to do anything but talk or navigate is illegal. But that doesn’t mean those “legal” uses are safe.

There are three types of distractions behind the wheel:  visual: taking your eyes off the road; manual: taking your hands off the wheel; and cognitive: taking your mind off the road

Anything that takes one or more of these functions away from the task of driving can end in disaster.

Some people think time behind the wheel is wasted if they are simply driving. After all, there are phone calls to return, lunch to be eaten, and schedules to plan. But multitasking, especially while behind the wheel, is an illusion - http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/03/health/distracted-driving-addiction-brain-impact/index.html

Taylor Swift’s recent hit “Look What You Made Me Do” was the inspiration for today’s message - https://youtu.be/3K0RzZGpyds

The fatality count of 246 is an increase of 10 since last Monday. In all of 2016, 404 people were killed on Iowa highways. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf
